How To Draw Awesome “Sports and Action Illustration”

Sports and Action Illustration Rocks! What is it? Illustrating athletes in motion capturing the action of their body moving, running, jumping, throwing, catching, diving, swimming, shooting, dribbling…etc. A few keys to awesome sports and action drawing:

  1. Use cool photos …most people think that a good artist draws and creates from their head, from memory. Not so. Every great artist draws and paints from a live model or a photo…so choose a model or photo (magazine photos work great) that is an interesting, accurate representation of the image you’re attempting to draw.
  2. Practice like crazy…trace, sketch, draw, paint and make lots of mistakes. This is essential to learn things like where the left arm is when the right arm is throwing or what kind of facial expressions go with certain actions or which arm and leg are up or down when someone is running.
  3. Use motion lines, background, sweat, dirt and grass….try using motion lines, sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. Often the way the background is drawn will represent motion…sometimes stuff like dirt, sweat, grass, snow or water flying up helps create a sense of action in the drawing.
  4. Pay attention to clothing…when an athlete is in motion so is their clothing. Learning to draw the folds and movements of an athlete’s clothing is essential otherwise the drawing won’t flow.
  5. Exaggerate something…depending on the kind of drawing your doing some exaggeration helps portray the actions of stretching, reaching, straining and extra effort.
  6. Pay attention to color…sports and color go together (think of your favorite athlete in their rival’s colors…doesn’t really work huh?).
